The "Bright Kids" initiative which focuses on children with Learning Disabilities, or what is sometimes referred to in medical terms: Specific Learning Difficulties, would have a major impact on the community as it is estimated that up to 20% of Australian primary school-aged children suffer from Specific Learning Difficulties, yet community awareness and government support of this problem is extremely low.

Aims and objectives.

Aims and objectives. Research shows that many children wrongly labelled "lazy", "slow" or simply "stupid" suffer from SLD. It is therefore crucial to have an early intervention program put in place where children which demonstrate certain symptoms are tested ASAP, given a clear diagnosis and a proper strategy is developed for them to be implemented at school and at home in order to help them with their particular condition. It is a known-fact that children with SLD who "fall through the cracks", by not been diagnosed early enough, end-up having low self-esteem and confidence, as they feel they are "inferior" to their peers and cannot compete with them. This belief often leads to long-term problems, including social, behavioural and mental problems.

More information on the Bright Kids, early intervention program:

With youth suicide rate on the increase especially amongst with the ones with low self-esteem, it is imperative that the community deal with this issue with a great urgency. Recent statistics demonstrate that a high number of the children, who left suicide notes behind, suffered from SLD. This was confirmed by analysing their notes by specialists.

What we propose with the "Bright Kids' early intervention program" is to run in the testing of children considered at "high risk". We will invite schools (including regional ones) to send us the names and profiles of students they want us to assess and our committee will decide on the ones eligible for the advanced assessment program. Our Committee is made-up of psychologists, speech pathologists, audiologists who have extensive expertise in the area of SLD. We will then advise the parents of the time and date of assessment.

Following the assessment, a comprehensive report is sent to the parents and schools with the appropriate recommendations for each individual case.
