Australia's oldest GLBTIQ charity, ALSO Care was setup in 1983 to protect the most vulnerable in our community. These were our Youth, our Seniors, people affected by crisis and those suffering from chronic illness. Since its inception it has alleviated the suffering for HIV/AIDS victims through support programs at Fairfield Hospital, giving assistance and care to those who struggled at home or those who just needed their community to provide carers or visitors. In more recent years ALSO Care started the Alsorts Youth Housing Project for homeless queer youth which houses an average of 8 kids every 3 months and the Val's Cafe program which trains care workers, institutions and those in the public sector how to care and respect the dignity of the ageing and disabled members of the queer community.
ALSO Care is committed to continue reaching those who are not already provisioned for by the GLBTIQ service providers and who remain vulnerable within our community. LGBT Youth anywhere are 12 times as likely to attempt suicide and 4 times as likely succeed, ALSOCare's Youth Action Plan combats this. We face LGBT Seniors in aged care who have no contact from their community and an industry both untrained and unsympathetic to their needs, Val's Cafe combats this. Our Charitable work as well as our carers and visitors programs need your help to assist us improve the quality of life for GLBTIQ people in need.
