Today, almost 20 million people are forced to live away from their homes as a result of conflict and persecution around the world. Almost 80% of them are women and children. UNHCR - the UN Refugee Agency - is the leading refugee agency in the world today over 100 countries where we are most needed often in extreme conditions and remote areas.

Achievements:

  • Since our establishment in 1950 we have helped more than 50 million people.
  • We have been awarded two Nobel Peace prizes for our humanitarian work and.
  • We have been the leading humanitarian agency in nearly every major refugee emergency.

What we do

"You really don't know what is going to happen to you. You don't care because when you left your country it was scary for you to stay there, so you just have to walk and give it to God."

"In the camp, many people suffer and a lot of kids suffer from malnourishment, so UNHCR helps people a lot. They provide the medicine and the centre for the malnourished children, immunisation. UNHCR did a lot of things, every week, for the people at the camp."

Mary Aduk, former refugee Sierra Leonne

Emergency Care- UNHCR is often the first point of contact for refugees in an emergency. We make sure their basic needs are met by providing such things as shelter, food, clean drinking water and essential health and medical care.

Return Home- Once an emergency is over we help people wherever possible to return to their homes .We provide transport back, supplies for the journey home and support activity to get people back on their feet when they have arrived.

Women and Children-We have special programs to make sure that the needs of children and women are looked after. We fund a range of educational and occupational training activities.

Peace and Security- So that people can return in safety to their homes and remain there we support peace creating initiatives and structures that help strengthen civic society.

We need your help

Despite our huge global challenge in helping the world's homeless, only 2% of UNHCR's budget comes from the United Nations each year .We must raise the rest from government contributions, corporate and individual donations .Every year we are unable to fund vital services because we simply don't have the funds.
