What is the Whitehorse Community Chest?

The Whitehorse Community Chest (The Chest) has a proud record of supporting the Whitehorse Community and has allocated over $3.4 million to eligible charitable and welfare organisations since its inauguration in 1962.

Endorsed by the City of Whitehorse, the Chest was set-up with the purpose of forming a pool from which money collected could be distributed to approved charities and groups and not-for-profit groups.

'Funding from the Chest has allowed many clients who are in a desperate situation both emotionally and financially to have counselling with a professional counsellor at no cost.' -Judy, Karinya Counselling Centre

Administered by a Volunteer Committee of Management and two part-time staff, the Chest has up to 1000 unpaid volunteers knock on doors within the City of Whitehorse gathering donations.

How are donations distributed?

Submissions from registered charitable and not-for-profit organisations are carefully considered and researched by a special Allocations Committee. Currently, the Chest supports over 40 organisations that provide benefits, either directly or indirectly, to the Whitehorse Community.

Centre 81 (Mitcham Uniting Church) - used their funds to purchase equipment for the Centre 81 kitchen e.g. microwave, pie warmer, stainless steel kitchen trolley. This purchase has facilitated the Soup & Pie lunches , which in conjunction with St. Vincent de Paul, are held at the Centre on the 1st & 3rd Thursdays of each month. Funds also went towards 520 food parcels that were provided to needy people in the local community.

Newhope Counselling (formerly Karinya Counselling Centre) - funding has allowed many clients who are in a desperate situation both emotionally and financially to have counseling with a professional counselor at no cost.

The Penumbra Centre - constructed an outdoor space for their members with funds from the Chest. The backyard was nothing but dirt and there was no useable outdoor space at all. Over the Christmas break, a landscaper lay a concrete slab. Although not looking very 'gardeny' at the minute, members are able to walk straight outside onto the slab (which is also undercover) without needing to step down, which is fantastic for those is wheelchairs, walking frames or any other mobility issue. The next project is to add raised garden beds and outdoor furniture to make it really beautiful!
