"The days of covering beautiful wetlands with bitumen should be well and truly over!

A coalition of local community and environment groups are fighting hard to protect the Beeliar wetlands and stop the Roe Highway extension, but the campaign needs your support!

At a time when most countries have stopped building freeways in favour of more sustainable transport, the WA Government is planning to spend more than $700 million on a highway that will lead to increased traffic congestion in Fremantle, and destroy beautiful wetlands and bushland habitat.

Once upon a time, the Swan Coastal Plain was covered in wetlands however 90% of these wetlands have been filled in for roads and housing developments. The Beeliar Wetlands are one of the last remaining viable wetlands in the southern metro region and the Beeliar Regional Park has become an iconic site of beauty, rest, amenity and recreation. The area is considered one of the most important cultural and heritage sites for Nyungar people in Perth.

In 2008, the State Government promised to remove Roe 8 from the planning scheme, after the Environmental Protection Authority said 'this road cannot be built without diminishing the ecological values of the reserves'.

Now the Barnett Government are again planning to ignore the EPA and build the Roe Highway extension.

Please donate generously so that CCWA and the Save Beeliar Wetlands Campaign can protect the Beeliar wetlands for future generations, rather than see them covered with bitumen."
