Our backyard is being poisoned
As Western Australians, we like to think of our state as a place where we can enjoy a clean environment without the impacts of industrial pollution. If we go for a walk in the bush we want to know we can drink from a stream, or if we catch a fish it will be safe for us to eat.
Sadly, we can no longer take a clean environment for granted as communities across WA are contaminated by polluting industries while governments take little or no action. But with your help we can make sure polluters are held to account for their actions.
Toxic lead pollution in Esperance, contamination of organic farms by genetically modified crops in the wheat-belt, repeated environmental breaches in transporting lead ore through Fremantle, and air pollution from industries in Cockburn. These real life examples remind us of what polluting industries will do here in WA if they can get away with it.
That's why at CCWA, we are training a network of citizen scientists across WA to conduct their own independent monitoring and to hold polluting industries accountable.
CCWA's groundbreaking Citizen Science Program is skilling local communities in scientific pollution monitoring that industry and governments can't argue with. The program has already achieved some incredible results including helping to secure the largest environmental fine in WA history for toxic lead contamination in the town of Esperance.
When polluting industries know that communities have the skills to conduct their own independent pollution monitoring, they really lift their game!
We are planning Citizen Science monitoring projects in a number of WA communities, but our resources are already stretched to the limit. We urgently need your help to secure more equipment and laboratory support, and to employ a dedicated Citizen Science Coordinator.
Your tax-deductable donation will help give more communities the skills and tools they need to hold polluting industries accountable and keep our environment clean.
