As we celebrate the life and cherish the memories of Phillip, who recently passed away, we extend a heartfelt invitation to honour his legacy in a way that resonates deeply with his journey. Phillip's life was profoundly touched by the Prader-Willi Syndrome Association of Victoria, particularly through their Time Out Camp, which became the highlight of his year, every year.
Diagnosed with Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS) at two and a half years of age, Phillip's early years were marked by the challenges of navigating a world where there was little information available about PWS (2 paragraphs in a medical journal) and less information on how to treat and best support Phillip. His diagnosis came from a paediatrician familiar with PWS from his work at the Children’s Hospital in London, England, highlighting the rarity and complexity of his condition. At the time, the life expectancy of someone diagnosed with PWS was 19 years of age.
Growing up in Central Queensland offered limited access to specialised medical support. It wasn't until the family's move to Victoria that Phillip's world began to transform. At 36, he attended his first PWS Camp, hosted by the PWSA Victoria, marking the beginning of a new chapter filled with friendship, community, and unprecedented independence.
The camp provided Phillip with a sanctuary where he could connect with others who shared his journey, including meeting his best friend, Tim, and discovering a shared passion for the Richmond Tigers. It was a place where Phillip could be himself, free from judgment and full of acceptance. His anticipation for the camp was evident, as he would spend months preparing for the talent show and ensuring his collection of orange clothing was ready for "Go Orange for PWS" day.
Phillip's annual participation in the camp was more than a tradition; it was a lifeline that fostered his independence, courage, and confidence. His achievements, like mastering the flying fox and joining the Mentors Program, were milestones that reflected his growth and the pivotal role of the camp in his life.
In remembrance of Phillip and the joy the PWSA Victoria brought into his life, we kindly ask for donations in lieu of flowers. Your support will enable the association to continue offering this vital camp and other supports for individuals with PWS and their families, ensuring that Phillip's legacy of courage, friendship, and independence lives on.
Together, let's celebrate Phillip's life by contributing to a cause that was close to his heart, helping others with PWS to experience the same joy and community that so enriched his life.
Your generosity in remembering Phillip in this meaningful way is deeply appreciated by his family and all those whose lives are touched by PWS.
