The Environment Defenders Office - The Environment's Legal Team
Who is the EDO?
We are a not-for-profit community law centre specialising in public interest environmental law.
If an environmental issue has a legal angle then our lawyers will be working on it.
The EDO defends the environment in a way that no other organisation can - as the environment's legal team. We're currently vibrant and strong, able to take on those important cases that no one else can. However, we can't take this for granted.
Help us maintain our current momentum and invest in the EDO by making a one-off donation or a regular monthly donation.
Regular donations from supporters like you enable us to build a secure and sustainable income on which to plan for the future - and allow our legal team to tackle the threats to our environment that might otherwise go unchallenged.
Like our case against the proposed new brown coal-fired power station in the Latrobe Valley. The case, if successful, will stop any new polluting coal-fired power stations being built in Victoria. Without the EDO's involvement, this landmark case would not run. Visit our website to read about what else we're working on at the moment.
What exactly will my donation be spent on?
Fighting in court to protect our environment is just part of what we do. We are the only environmental organisation doing what we do: litigation, law reform and legal advice as well as community education.
Legal representation
We are the 'go-to' lawyers for a diverse range of clients, from grassroots community groups to national NGOs. There is no other organisation with the capacity and expertise to act for these groups across such a wide range of issues including mining, land use planning, water and biodiversity conservation.
Policy and law reform
Our frontline litigation experience gives us the credibility to carry out our law reform work so successfully, pressing for federal and Victorian laws that are sufficiently strong to protect our environment. We also work closely with other environmental organisations, such as Environment Victoria and the Australian Conservation Foundation, adding our legal expertise to their campaigning know-how.
Information and advice
Empowering people with the knowledge to protect the places they love is central to what we do. Our free telephone advice service is available 5 days a week. On a one-to-one basis, our lawyers advise individuals and community groups on their specific situation, helping them to understand the laws and processes involved in using the law to defend their environment.
Community education
Through our community education work, we aim to give the public a genuinely powerful voice on environmental issues. Our monthly VCAT workshops assist people objecting to developments on environmental grounds. Our free monthly environmental seminars on topical environmental law issues ensure that everyone who is interested has an opportunity to hear from leading environmental professionals, policy makers and academics.
Publications
Every month a staggering 700 publications are downloaded from our website: self-help kits to guide individuals through the legal complexities of the planning system, factsheets on Forest Law, mining, carbon tax and our free online legal resource Environmental Law Online. Not to mention our free fortnightly e-bulletin updating over 1,600 subscribers on environmental legal news.
A donation from you really will make a difference.
You'll be helping our lawyers put their expertise to work as the environment's legal team, meeting the environmental challenges of the next 20 years head-on.
