Braille is literacy for children and adults who are blind or have low vision.
In Australia, only 3% to 5% of print material is available in an accessible format.
For every one hundred books a sighted child has access to, there are only five books available to a blind child.
Children cannot learn skills such as spelling, grammar, and punctuation through other methods, such as audio, only with braille. Reading and writing are the fundamentals of education and without these basics, individuals are disadvantaged.
In 2023, Braille House produced 71,263 pages in braille. That is a 25% increase on the previous year, thanks to the support of generous donors like you.
Born with cortical vision impairment (CVI), Eva has trouble focusing, looking at people and seeing objects in a ‘busy’ background. That makes it difficult for her to read, learn and make friends. Most children with CVI become permanently blind.
Thanks to Braille House, Eva can now access books she can read. But the number of visually impaired Australians is rising, making the need for Braille House’s services more urgent than ever.
Your support will have a positive impact on the lives of children and adults who are blind or have low vision, as they experience the absolute joy of reading.
