Women residing in refugee camps and in the slums of Kenya are greatly disadvantaged, and constantly face obstacles to their ability to fully participate in their development. This is more prominent during the time of menstruation. Due to lack of accessibility and inability to afford sanitary pads, hygiene is neglected. The purchase of sanitary towels may be a decision which is made at the expense of a meal. Some girls resort to using rags and old blankets, while some do not use anything at all! The girls are ridiculed by their peers due to soiled clothes or bad odours. This leads to high rate of absenteeism from school and poor academic performance.
How will the funds be used?
The funds donated will be used to address these obstacles and reduce gender inequalities by empowering young girls and teenage mothers through training programs and seminars focused around improving personal hygiene (e.g. making low cost, hygienic sanitary towels). The project also wishes to incorporate other important and emerging issues that may directly or indirectly affect the development of disadvantaged young girls and the community. These include; HIV/AIDS, gender based violence, child labour, and early pregnancy.
