In a typical primary school in Kenya and Somalia, the state of the sanitary facilities and the level of the children's hygiene are terrible. Often hundreds of children have to share single pit latrines. The floors are covered with fresh faeces and are wet with urine. Bare foot children must stand in this mess to relieve themselves. Boys and girls are forced by circumstances to share a toilet or use adjacent latrines. There are also no cleaning products such as disinfectants or even hand-washing facilities, running water and toilet paper.
This shame and utter violation of personal dignity is what thousands of school children in Kenya and Somalia grow up with. It has been documented that some girls drop out of school during puberty because of sanitation related embarrassments.
Schoolsdo have the opportunity to combat disease and improve the state of humanity. With increased sanitation there will also be an increase in the number of children enrolling in primary schools, the school has an important role not only in imparting health knowledge but also altering basic hygiene habits.
