FYA's Opportunity Scholarships Appeal

Opportunity Scholarships make a real and tangible difference in the lives of talented disadvantaged students attending government schools.

It is now widely accepted that the wellbeing of young people depends on a mix of factors ranging from the socioeconomic to health and education of each individual. Improving the opportunities for young people to harness their passions and experience success in one area of life through an Opportunity Scholarship has potential flow-on benefits into all facets of their life including their education.

How will the funds be used?

Scholarships of up to $1,000 are awarded to deserving students to provide them with the opportunity to pursue their talents and experience success in their lives. Funds provided through Opportunity Scholarships are often used to pay for things like additional tutoring and access to extension activities, specialised sporting or music equipment, and educational resources to enable full participation in various aspects of school life.

Elise's story:

Elise is a secondary school student from a regional high school who is an exceptional writer of fiction but had no access to a computer at home. Funding provided through the Opportunity Scholarships program has enabled Elise to purchase a basic laptop computer and printer so that she no longer has to write all of her stories out by hand and then re-type them when she can get access to a computer at school. Elise's nominating teacher told us that, Elise, "is not from a wealthy family and her mother has very recently had a new baby so she is working under difficult conditions."
