- To offer Indigenous children - who have shown musical potential - the opportunity to receive specialist choral training and music education through the Gondwana National Indigenous Children's Choir.
- To give Indigenous children the opportunity to identify with, take pride in and celebrate their cultural heritage, learning a repertoire based on Indigenous song and language.
- To give members of the GNICC the opportunity to join with their peers from across Australia and take part in musical, social and cultural education and performance opportunities and share the voice of their generation with both the nation and the world.
- To offer a creative pathway and environment in which Indigenous children can aspire to a career in music, and become more aware of the opportunities available to them.
- To provide a happy and safe environment in which Indigenous children are proud to learn, perform, be inspired, socialise and flourish.
How will the funds be used?
Funds will be used to cover the costs associated with the three elements of the GNICC Program: Community Workshops, Regional Music Camps and Performance at major national and international events:
- Community Workshops: Gondwana Choirs is working to develop a network of community workshops in Indigenous communities and primary schools with a high proportion of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island children across Australia. From these workshops, children with musical potential will be selected for Regional Music Camps and eventually progress to become part of the Gondwana National Indigenous Children's Choir. Gondwana Choirs is grateful for the generous support they have received from the NAB, the GNICC's Founding Partner, to facilitate workshops along the East Coast of Australia in 2009. We require further funding to help take these workshops right across Australia in 2010.
- Regional Music camps: give Indigenous children the opportunity to come together and learn valuable skills, draw on their creative talents and meet other talented Indigenous children from their region, working with some of Australia's most respected conductors and local musicians and artists in the Regional Music Camps. With support from the Clayton Utz Foundation and a private philanthropic trust, Regional Music Caps are taking place in Cairns and Sydney in 2009, however we require funding for our Regional Music Camps in the Torres Strait, Victoria, WA and NT in 2010.
- National and International Performances: Performance opportunities are an important goal for the children in the GNICC to work towards and a means for them to share their talent with Australia and the world and inspire their peers from across Australia. The support of our Major Partner, Qantas enables the GNICC to undertake one major performance in Australia per year in 2009-2011, however we require additional funding to accept other exciting performance opportunities when they arise.
Gondwana Choirs is supported by the Australia Council for the Arts and Arts NSW, however this funding covers just over 10% of our operating costs for the full range of our programs (Sydney's Children Choir, Gondwana Choral Program and Gondwana National Indigenous Children's Choir). We rely on income from philanthropy, corporate sponsorship, performance fees and participation fees to cover the remainder of our operating costs.
