About this cause
In October 2005, Hands Across the Water was formed to support the children who were orphaned as a result of the boxing day tsunami. The aim of Hands was to provide a home and ongoing support for the children who had lost their parents. Since that time Hands has raised over AUD$2 million and in doing so has never spent one cent of donors' money on administration. To date we have built two orphanages, a community centre, a sports field, purchased a rubber plantation so that the orphanages will be self-sufficient and many other smaller projects. The aim of Hands is to support the children and the community in the long term recovery process. Even though it is over five years since the event, the challenges for the children will continue for many years. Hands has a number of projects it is working towards this year which includes the building our fourth major project, at a cost of AUD$1 million which will provide a health care centre, community centre, education centre and further accommodation to meet the needs that exist within the community. This project has been funded through the previous generosity of donors and we are now underway in construction.

How will the funds be used?

The funds raised during the coming events will be used in a number of ways. The recurrent costs of the projects that Hands is involved in is increasing all the time as we expand, but we are endeavouring to meet those costs through the increasing sustainable projects we are investing in. Our immediate focus is to establish a respite centre for the children who fall ill in the orphanages. The problem is with all the kids living under one roof, when one gets sick or is troubled at night time all the other are quickly affected. We hope to build a small centre that can be used by the children who have taken ill. It will give them a place to recover and allow the children not affected a chance of avoiding whatever is going around. With 72 kids sleeping together, there is always something in the air.
