The Keep Australia Beautiful Network has been encouraging people all around Australia to care for their local environment since 1968.

Our awards programs such as Tidy Towns, Sustainable Cities, and Clean Beaches, target litter, recycling, packaging waste and graffiti. The programs also target priority issues such as energy, water and resource conservation. Local participants are recognised for their achievements in helping to achieve environmental, social and economic sustainability in local communities across the country.

The National Litter Index reports on litter by type, location and volume.

Keep Australia Beautiful Week coincides with the first week of spring and is a time for all Australians to think about how they can contribute to the KAB mission of 'positive environmental change through individual actions'.

These are just some of the activities that involve up to 3 million Australians each year.

How will the funds be used?

Funds will be allocated to priority activities within the Keep Australia Beautiful Network, including:

  • The Australian Sustainable Communities Awards consisting of Tidy Towns, Sustainable Cities and Clean Beaches.
  • Litter Research including the National Litter Index and Branded Litter Study
  • Awareness and behaviour change programs such as Keep Australia Beautiful Week.

Key Areas of Expenditure

Assisting finalists to attend awards presentations where they can learn from other finalists from around the country.
Sending expert judges to visit awards finalists to provide encouragement and advice and to help improve and promote local environmental projects.
Assisting in the design and conduct of national research that helps community, industry and government address local environmental issues such as litter and recycling.
  • Working with media, industry, schools and local government to encourage practical individual actions that help achieve environmentally sustainable lifestyles. Recent Keep Australia Beautiful Week activities have included an environmental spring clean kit for households and a national challenge to score points for the environment.
