Your donation will help our researchers to investigate the nature, origins and causes of mental illnesses that affect one in five Australians, and to use the knowledge gained to improve diagnosis and treatment and to ultimately prevent mental illnesses.
How will the funds be used?
Funds will be used to support ongoing research into Alzheimer's Disease, schizophrenia and depressive illnesses, including bipolar disorder. The Institute also has research programs in related issues such as suicide and addiction.

Developing effective treatments for mental illnesses
Particular Research programs include:
- The development of an effective treatment that may halt brain cell death in Alzheimer's Disease, following our discovery of the cause of the symptoms of Alzheimer's Disease.
- Investigation of the nature and severity of abnormalities in brain function through a long-term study following a large group of individuals as they age, with a goal of developing methods for early diagnosis of illnesses such as Alzheimer's Disease.
- New collaborative treatment approaches for the comprehensive care of people with mental illnesses.
- Analysis of how genetic factors influence the efficacy of current treatments for mental illnesses, with a view to identifying the most effective treatment for each individual before commencing treatment.
- Research into the cognitive deficits that affect language, memory, thinking and emotion and can be symptoms of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and other psychiatric disorders, in order to inform the design of new, more effective treatments and psychological interventions.
- Ultimate prevention of mental illnesses in both young and aged people through early diagnosis, early intervention and effective treatment.
