Milpirri: Coming Home is the two year journey toward a key moment in the history of an extraordinary collaboration and an remarkable arts and cultural event.
Lajamanu community's Milpirri performance merges traditional Warlpiri ceremony with contemporary Western culture, it mixes local hip hop and ancient songs, modern dance and traditional dance and brings old and young people together. 'Milpirri' are the clouds that result from the coming together of opposites, when the hot and cold forces of air come together before the wet and produce the milpirri clouds. The Milpirri production is a metaphor for the 'coming together' of differences.
This documentary follows the route of taking the Milpirri performance from Lajamanu to traditional Warlpiri country at the Granites. This has been a long-standing dream for the community and the collaborative production team who have been staging Milpirri every second year for eight years now.
PAW Media and Communications in co-production with People Pictures are looking to fund the development phase of this feature documentary. This involves research, scripting and filming on location at the 2011 Milpirri in October which is the dramatic dress rehearsal for the momentous 2013 event that is planned to take place at Granites.
