Mission Australia has been helping to transform the lives of Australians for 150 years. Our vision is to see a fairer Australia by enabling people in need to find pathways to a better life. We aim to achieve this through more than 400 services in every State and Territory that provide assistance to help people find pathways away from homelessness; help families and children to overcome hardship; support disadvantaged young people; deliver entry-level training; and help unemployed people find permanent work.

We need your support to continue to deliver services to Queenslanders who are doing it tough.

Cafe One on Wickham

Cafe One on Wickham is a cafe where people who are homeless, or at-risk of homelessness, can access a range of services. Cafe on Wickham provides:

  • Low cost meals
  • Referrals
  • Flexible and informal case management
  • Crisis counselling
  • Advocacy

Nightspot

Nightspot is an emergency accommodation service that allows vulnerable youth to stay in the homes of trained community volunteers for one night at a time, in order to 'take stock' in a safe environment. Young people are transported to and from 'host family' homes by volunteer drivers.

It is primarily an early intervention service which is aimed at preventing young homeless people from becoming entrenched in a pattern of chronic homelessness. The program is aimed at 'low-risk' young people (16-21 years) who are generally in an immediate crisis situation (for example, an argument with family that required some 'time-out' on both sides, and where there are no other options for that young person.)

Pathways to Prevention

Pathways to prevention is an innovative crime prevention and early intervention partnership between Mission Australia, Griffith University and Queensland Department of Education. Operating as a family support service, Pathways to prevention supports families with children aged 0-12 in South West Brisbane.

The program improves the opportunities of children by developing their social, communication and behavioural skills while enhancing the ability of caregivers to respond to their child's needs appropriately.

The Catalyst Program

The Catalyst Program is designed to provide to those who may not normally access university education, enrolment in a course through the Australian Catholic University.

Mission Australia established the Catayst program in 2005 which began in Brisbane in 2006. The program is based on the successful Clemente program model in the USA and operates worldwide. Its philosophy is that tertiary-level education in the humanities can assist socially disenfranchised/marginalised people out of poverty and homelessness. Accredited university courses are delivered in a community setting in which the students feel familiar and comfortable.
