Recently, plans have emerged for to mine coal in the Margaret River region, with the first proposed mine at Osmington, 15km from the town centre.
Coal mining in the southwest corner will cause irreparable damage to the land, our water supplies, the livelihoods of residents, the viability of businesses, and the Margaret River food, wine and tourism brand.
Shafts would need to be drilled through the Leederville aquifer, which provides water to Cowaramup and Margaret River residents. Mine tunnels could travel kilometres under landowners' properties and businesses and even under the Margaret River itself. It is estimated that 40 tonnes of coal would be trucked from the site every nine minutes, day and night, for about the next 20 years if these appalling plans were to go ahead.
The Conservation Council of Western Australia is working with the NO COALition Inc. established by citizens of Margaret River and its surrounds to prevent damage from mining to the water supplies and natural environment of the region.
NO COALition has an enthusiastic group of volunteers taking up the fight against this proposed coal mine. Your donation is urgently needed to fund legal challenges and support a community awareness program to ensure that this polluting industry does not get a foothold in Western Australia's favourite tourist destination.
Please donate generously to help the Margaret River community prevent coal mining in their backyard!
