Appeal to Support the Oolong Sanctuary

The Friends of Oolong are looking to reconstruct the entire eco-system of the Oolong habitat/remnants linked by corridors.

Our goal is to protect and enhance the natural environment and cultural heritage of Oolong.
Without your support, we will not be able to carry out important wetlands and woodland reconstruction work.

"There are no natural hollows on young trees! They have to be at least 100 years old to have natural hollows for wildlife to nest in. The Friends of Oolong have temporarily resolved this problem by stacking branches of woody weeds in small heaps. Birds, insects and other species nest and breed in them! We need to get donations to pay two casual labourers @22/hr each to use brush cutters to remove the woody weed Sifton Bush. It works very efficiently and we are able to continue - in the cleared areas - the planting of tube stock of local flora to revegetate the area affected by the woody weed. It is a long process since the area involved is over 100a of the sanctuary.

Development of a support system for aquaponics - two small above ground pools at about $250 each from ebay.

"Fund for Nature Reserves" to assist and promote the purchase of vegetation remnants of high nature heritage and conservation value.

To provide funding for a biological survey. The survey will enable an overview of biodiversity in the area including the recording of any endangered and threatened species, including the "Superb Parrot" and the Regent Honeyeater and also enable us in the determination of the endangered status of the habitat and gain its recognition as such.

To provide funds for the construction, setting up, monitoring, maintenance and evaluation of the use of nest boxes by birds and other fauna in habitat/remnants.
