Many people cannot afford to pay for their own legal representation and legal aid does not cover all of them. QPILCH fills some of this gap by coordinating free legal services in certain cases outside the areas of family and criminal law.

How will the funds be used?

QPILCH may be able to provide the help of a lawyer or barrister on a pro bono basis, however, legal action can still be prevented because the applicant is unable to pay for other costs associated with legal action. These can include filing fees, the cost of obtaining expert reports and travel expenses of witnesses. These out of pocket expenses, known as disbursements, can be very high and have the potential to stop an otherwise worthwhile case moving forward.

Donations to this appeal will be used to cover disbursements necessary to pursue legal action in pro bono cases. They are kept separate from our operating accounts and will not be used to fund office expenses.

Donations may also be used as seed funding to establish new projects run by QPILCH or other community legal centres for the relief of poverty and increased access to justice and the legal system. Projects previously set up by QPILCH include:

  • A legal service for homeless people currently located in Brisbane, Toowoomba and Townsville.
  • A service to provide free legal advice and assistance to refugees and other humanitarian entrants in civil law matters, other than immigration law.
  • A service to assist self-represented litigants in the Supreme and District Courts and the Court of Appeal.
  • A project to enhance the delivery of pro bono legal services to rural, regional and remote Queensland.
