The appeal is to raise funds for a young Nigerian man, Titus Ani, who is on death row in Denpasar, Bali. An Australian legal team consisting of Brisbane barrister Ronald Peterson and Russell Thirgood, a partner at McCullough Robertson Lawyers, have been working on a pro bono bases and have reached the conclusion that Titus has been sentenced to death on false premises.

They will need to retain Indonesian lawyers to present Titus at the final appeal. The Indonesian lawyers are unable to work on a pro bono basis. Further, there are other disbursements such as the costs of obtaining a DNA test and engaging a lawyer from Nigeria and potentially a lawyer from Pakistan.

In total, approximately $100,000 is required for their final appeal.

How will the funds be used?

The funds will be used to cover Mr Ani's legal defence.

If there are surplus funds raised they will be applied for other pro bono uses, such as QPILCH's disbursement fund for outlays that arise from pro bono referrals. It is hoped that a not for profit organisation to provide legal assistance for others on death row cases in the Asia-Pacific region will eventually be established.
