There are many younger people in nursing homes or aged care facilities in Australia. They live in aged care facilities because they have a condition like Acquired Brain Injury or an Intellectual Disability. As younger people, living in a nursing home, provides little or no age appropriate activities.

We have established a participant driven social and recreational program that provides regular activities and social outings for younger people in nursing homes. This program also strives to elevate the social profile of younger people in nursing homes and restore dignity of choice to their lives, thus enhancing the quality of their lives. The Younger People in Nursing Homes Project advocates for improved age appropriate services within the community.

How will the funds be used?

Almost every community in Australia is touched by the fact that no age appropriate, medium to long term care facilities are available for younger people that need a high level of daily care due to a disability. Moreover, residing in aged care is not ideal for younger people, increasing isolation and emotional stress. With an ever growing need in this often unseen area of our community more and more nursing homes are requesting our services. We wish to further develop the Younger People in Nursing Homes Project to allow for this growing need. This would enable us to broaden our program and assist more younger people living in aged care.
