Rose Charities Australia Ltd was established to implement, build capacity for, and support simple, sustainable, cost effective rehabilitation programs for the marginalised of the world.
The focus of our efforts at the moment is the establishment of a rehabilitation centre attached to Chea Chumneas Hospital, Takhmao, Cambodia. Hospital management is encouraging this development of rehabilitation services for the area and they are very grateful to have this project underway. The Ministry of Health has only recently prioritised health care for those with disabilities, previously the majority of services have been carried out solely by NGOs. By coordinating government health services together with ours, we are closer to achieving longer term improvements in health and rehabilitation for Cambodians.
Physiotherapy treatment will be our focus following a locally identified lack of appropriate pre- and post-operative rehabilitation. The Rose Charities aim is to provide high quality rehabilitation for people with disabilities and injuries, which means physiotherapy is crucial. Without the right exercises and splinting following a burn, for example, the result can mean someone is left with extremely restricting joint and skin contractures, even with surgery. Many congenital deformities can be improved significantly, before even having surgery, if the right physiotherapy intervention is given. This can impact the lives of children and families so much, especially in Cambodia, a country where disability has long resulted in discrimination, shame and plunging even further into poverty.
