What do we do?
The Sisters of the Good Samaritan Foundation respond to the call of the needy, especially disadvantaged women and children in Australia. For over 150 years the Sisters have initiated important projects in communities throughout Australia with little or no Government assistance.
Our key project in Brisbane and Melbourne is dedicated to providing safe, supported accommodation for women and children who have been victims of domestic violence and would otherwise find themselves homeless. Whilst in our care, our support workers work with the women to help build their confidence, self esteem, support networks and social skills.
Why is it so important?
Statistics show that in Australia, one in three women over the age of 15 have reported experiencing physical or sexual violence. These women are our mothers, our girlfriends, our wives, our daughters, our colleagues and our friends. The cost to the community and to families is untold - at least 6 women a month die through violence and abuse. Violence outstrips obesity, drink driving, breast cancer, and smoking as the leading contributor to death, disability and illness to women in the prime of their life (Statistics source: White Ribbon Foundation).
