Gateway to Green Community Living

SRS are raising funds to build supported accommodation homes for people with disabilities. This will provide much needed accommodation for socially vulnerable and disadvantaged people.

The waiting list for accommodation suitable for people with special needs is lengthy and continues to grow steadily, and with little or no movement in the list, unfortunately, the hard truth is that many of these people will not make it to the top. SRS seeks to make a difference in helping the disadvantaged people of our community to be able to be as independent as they can be, in accommodation suitable for their needs, but which also represents a home - not an institution - not fifty years down the track, but NOW.

For many of us, independence arrives when we turn 18 and move away to university, or in today's times - a bit later, perhaps 25-30 when we've finally saved up enough for a home deposit. But, it's not a given - and many people take independence for granted. There are people in our community who, because of their disability, are unable to take the next step of moving our independently without many years of waiting, planning, support and a lot of money.

For those of us who have not had the experience of looking after a person who requires extra support for daily living, it is difficult for us to understand and realise the full impact, struggles and worries faced by families and carers. There are people who are 25, 40, 60 years old who, although may have grown into an adult body, still require the same supports as a newborn baby, and who will continue to require this support throughout their life. There are people who require care 24 hours, 7 days a week and because of their disability, are unable to independently complete daily activities and earn an income through paid employment - remaining on a pension. They continue to be stuck in accommodation 'limbo' with families and elderly carers concerned about what will happen to their loved one should they not be here.

Building Materials - concrete slab, framing, bricks, plaster board, insulation, roofing, electrical wiring, windows, doors, nails, screws etc.

Appliances and fittings - tracking system, air conditioning/heating unit, water heater, light fittings, cupboards, sinks, mirror, vanity basin, shower/bath, taps, toilet, hand rails, fan, oven, microwave, stove, exhaust fans, carpet, outdoor pavers, blinds etc

Labour costs - Builders, electrician, plumbing, labourers.

Furniture - bed, couch, dining table, chairs television, drawers etc.
