You only need to spend a day in a wheelchair or with someone in a wheelchair to discover the transport limitations and frustrations faced by these people each day. With many essential doctor appointments to attend - utilising taxis is expensive and quickly erodes the little income they have. Although there are some public buses which will accommodate wheelchairs, not all routes go to the required locations or are accessible. Other independent community transport services are in high demand, with many booked out well in advance and simply not enough services to cover the need.
Mobility is important to all people. It affords us the opportunity to interact with each other and take part in work, leisure, and business activities. Research shows that people who do not drive and who cannot access transport services often experience isolation, unable to access social and employment opportunities, suffer depression and other health problems and a decreased quality of life.
We aim to help people with disabilities overcome their transport difficulties through purchasing a wheelchair vehicle - helping them to get out and about in the community without barriers stopping them.
The funds will be used to purchase a wheelchair vehicle for people with disabilities. It is estimated that this vehicle with wheelchair modifications will cost approximately $85,000.
