About this cause

KBYG Needs You

Dear friend of children and media

For 24 years, Know Before You Go (KBYG) has helped Australian families make confident, informed choices about what their children watch.

But the reality is that navigating media today is harder than ever. As a parent shared with us:

This movie has scary scenes and violence, so why is it rated 'G'? It was the most scared my 6 yr old has been in a movie, so much so he wanted to leave

Another said:

Current PG rating states ‘some material may be inappropriate for children’... How do I know before I see it whether it is appropriate?!!

KBYG is the answer to that question. Our reviews go beyond simple age ratings, they’re grounded in child development expertise and give parents practical tools—like conversation starters—to turn screen time into meaningful moments.

KBYG is widely trusted and recognized for its impact. Our work has been honoured with several prestigious awards, including:

•         Children’s Week Awards (2016 & 2011) for outstanding contributions to child welfare and movie reviews

•         NAPCAN Play Your Part Award (2016) for our Know Before You Load app service

•         Australian Crime and Violence Prevention Award (2009)

•         National Child Protection Award (2005)

We got a nice response to our last fundraiser, but this service is still at risk.

We need to raise $30,000 in the next four weeks to keep KBYG running.

Here’s what most people don’t see:

•         Each review costs around $750 to produce

•         Government funding ended in 2019 and hasn’t been reinstated

•         For seven years, we’ve been relying on volunteer effort and occasional donations

•         A CEO transition and an office move made 2025 an unusually challenging year for us

Despite all this, we’ve continued—because we know how much families depend  on KBYG.

Every day, parents use our reviews to avoid inappropriate content, to choose wisely, and to connect more deeply with their children in an increasingly complex media landscape.

Now we need your help to continue, so please donate. Every contribution counts. Consider what KBYG can save a busy parent in time, stress, and even a few disappointing cinema trips.

You can also:

•         Share – Pass the link to the fundraiser on to parents, grandparents, educators, and anyone who cares about children’s wellbeing

•         Advocate – Contact your local state or federal representatives and tell them why KBYG matters

•         Connect with us – Introduce us to family-friendly businesses as potential sponsors

•         Volunteer – Help us grow our reach and sustain this vital service

Your support will help ensure Australian families can continue to access trusted, thoughtful guidance when it matters most.

On behalf of families across Australia—thank you.
