About this cause

Andrew Shaw Foundation

Andrew Shaw was a young Tasmanian man who died of an AIDS related illness in 1987. In Andrew's memory TasCAHRD and his family established the Andrew Shaw Foundation (ASF). The foundation is administered by TasCAHRD and is funded through various community activities including Red Ribbon sales during AIDS Awareness Week and private donations. ASF offers financial assistance to people living with or directly affected by HIV/AIDS who are experiencing economic hardship.

Why are we needed?

  • One third of people living with HIV (PLHIV) in Tasmania live below the poverty line.  Many are socially isolated.
  • Despite the dramatic advances in HIV testing and treatment there remains no cure or effective vaccine.
  • Reported transmissions in Tasmania are on the rise and requests for support via the Foundation are increasing.
  • The ASF is the only emergency relief funding program for people with HIV and their carers in Tasmania.

How will the funds be used?

Andrew Shaw Foundation funds are used for the provision of material, emotional and social support to people living with HIV/AIDS.

Specifically, Andrew Shaw Foundation funds are used to:

  • Promote the health status and well-being of Tasmanian people living with HIV/AIDS;
  • Reduce the impact of HIV/AIDS on individuals in Tasmania;
  • Enhance the dignity and quality of life of Tasmanian people affected by HIV/AIDS;
  • Assist people in households affected by HIV/AIDS;
  • Encourage self-help groups of people affected by or at high risk of HIV/AIDS;
  • Address the causes of HIV/AIDS-related poverty in Tasmania;
  • Encourage, assist, monitor and promote medical, social and scientific research into the causes, Prevention and cure of HIV/AIDS and HIV/AIDS-related conditions;
  • Promote the health of people who are at higher risk of / or living with HIV/AIDS, and educate for and promote personal lifestyles which minimise the risk of transmission of HIV/AIDS;
  • Raise funds to achieve these objectives.
