Giving deaf children a voice appeal

About this cause
This appeal is to raise funds to help deaf and hearing impaired children aged 0-5 years old, learn to listen and speak.

What does the Shepherd Centre do?

The Shepherd Centre has been helping children who are deaf or hearing impaired to learn how to listen and speak for 40 years.

Founded in 1970 with just five families, The Shepherd Centre now helps over 220 families in our five centres across NSW and the ACT. The organisation is recognised as a leader in the field of Auditory-Verbal Therapy, providing assistance to parents of children who are deaf and hearing impaired to develop spoken language, so that they can reach their full potential and be a fully contributing member of the community.

The Shepherd Centre has assisted over 1,500 children and their families over the last 40 years. Ninety per cent of children graduate from The Shepherd Centre and enter mainstream schooling and the vast majority have age-appropriate speech and language.

Support from the community provides almost 75% of the much needed funds to provide these programs to our students. Without donations from our supporters we would not be able to provide deaf and hearing-impaired children and their families with the help they so desperately need.

Key Areas of Expenditure

Weekly, one on one, auditory verbal therapy sessions for a deaf child and their parent or carer.
  • Home visits by our Family Counselor to families who are experiencing difficulties coming to terms with, or in relation to, their child's hearing loss.
The purchase of audiological equipment to test the hearing of babies and children who are diagnosed as hearing impaired.
  • Parenting classes to teach families strategies to best assist their child who is deaf.
Weekly playgroups where children who are deaf can play and interact with one another. Playgroups also give parents the opportunity to network and discuss the progress of their children or any problems they are facing.
