Most people today require legal help at some point in their lives. However, for many people in Sydney requiring legal help, the reality is that they:
- Cannot afford a private lawyer (a lawyer that they can pay for themselves at normal commercial rates - often $330-$440 p/hour); and
- Do not qualify for Legal Aid (a lawyer paid for by the government - generally only available for people on full Centrelink benefits with no significant assets).
We believe that all people should have access to legal help regardless of their background or financial circumstances. So, as an expression of Christian faith, Waybridge Ministries operates Horizons Community Legal Centre to provide free and non-profit legal services to disadvantaged people who would otherwise be dealing with legal issues without appropriate help.
How will the funds be used?
The funds raised will help to continue the work of Horizons Community Legal Centre, providing free and non-profit legal advice, referrals, representation (both in and out of Court) and community legal education.
Horizons Community Legal Centre began operation in January 2005. At that point, there was no other generalist community legal centre serving North and North Western Sydney (an area which was home to more than 700,000 people). We have experienced continuing growth in referrals and in 2009 expanded our services to include an advice clinic in Southern Sydney. As demand continues to grow, so does the need for expansion of our services.
