About this cause
People from every state of Australia and potentially from overseas; people with and without disabilities; people in mini buses, wheelchairs, with white canes, guide dogs, interpreters, carers and huge smiles; performers from grass roots to professional and all levels of experience in between; community engagement, acceptance and support; five hundred volunteers and a brilliant team of dedicated managers; a program with 47 individual events; this was Awakenings 2007.

A festival for everyone:

Awakenings has evolved into a festival for everyone, the program includes: performing and visual arts, a breakfast conference, workshops, schools and community performances, a ball, outdoor adventures, a photographic competition, buskers, live performances, stalls, tactile art activities, wheelchair basketball and community fringe events. The first Awakenings festival program in 1996 consisted of a three hour performance involving 40 performers of all abilities. This annual event has grown each year, in 2006 the program has attracted 750 registered participants and performers with a volunteer base of 500 and event attendances expected to be in the vicinity of 10500. A key Australian event in the disability arts sector, Awakenings is now recognised nationally and internationally.
