Windgap supports people with intellectual disabilities to live their lives with independence, freedom and dignity.
Our vision is to champion the cause of people with an intellectual disability and we are now calling on the community to help us continue our work.
Why is our work so vital?
- Intellectual disability directly affects over 800, 000 Australians and their carers every year.
- Most Australians have little understanding of what living with an intellectual disability means on a daily basis. Things like communicating, remembering, using public transport, using money, making friends and understanding others are often major challenges.
- With the rapidly ageing population comes the rapidly growing problem of the ageing carer. There are many elderly Australians right now asking themselves the question: Who will care for my adult child when I die?
- Loneliness and isolation are significant problems for people with an intellectual disability. In many cases, the people they spend most of their time with are paid to be with them. There is a desperate need for greater public awareness of this issue and improved social inclusion in the broader community.
- Intellectual disability is one of the most forgotten areas of the not-for-profit sector. There are no major corporate sponsors aligned with this cause in Australia. This is both an opportunity and an indicator of our national awareness of this cause.
