About this cause

WFWIA is a registered not for profit organisation and a Public Benevolent Institution.

Why we are needed.

Poverty is endemic throughout Kenya and many parts of Africa. The slum of Kibera consists of approximately one million people with very few able to provide adequate food for their families. It is one of the largest slums in the world and the largest in East Africa.

Women for Women in Africa aim to assist in educating as many children from Kibera as possible and training women to learn new skills so they can provide for their families.

People live in ramshackle huts, no more than 3m x 3m in size. Raw sewerage and rubbish are everywhere outside. There is neither tap water, rubbish collections nor powerlines. Kibera is built in a steep valley so water flows through all shacks when it rains. Most adults are unemployed. Infectious diseases, HIV/AIDS, gangs, physical assaults and rapes are commonplace in Kibera.

How are donations spent?

  • Provide access to education for the children and adults living in slums in Kenya;
  • Provide opportunity through training programs to women to develop independent sources of income and sustenance to support their families;
  • Assist in-country partners in building schools and related infrastructure as a means of breaking the cycle of poverty as part of local community development projects;
  • Develop holistic, self-sustaining development programs covering education, skills transference, agriculture, small business enterprise, health and nutrition;
  • Support and work with to achieve the holistic development of people in Kenya and provide opportunities for linkages between such individuals and the Australian community;
  • Encourage donors and supporters to participate in activities of designed to further its principal purpose.

How much is needed?

Women for Women in Africa has raised over $3 million AUD to date but new schools need building and more children require an education. We aim to build our own school with the assistance of our Kenyan partner charity. Donations will always be needed and the amount is virtually limitless.

We do not receive any government funding. All donations are spent on the people of Kibera.
