Australia for UNHCR raises funds to support the humanitarian programs of the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR). UNHCR helps refugees at every stage of their ordeal. As well as providing emergency shelter, food, water and medical care, UNHCR strives to improve refugees' quality of life and future opportunities, providing infrastructure, schools and income generating projects in established refugee camps and communities. Australia for UNHCR also raises funds for those who are internally displaced, those who have been affected by natural disasters, returnees, stateless people and asylum-seekers.
How will the funds be used?
Long after a crisis fades from the media spotlight, UNHCR continues to provide ongoing support to refugees and displaced people in need. Without the support of donors, Australia for UNHCR could not provide schools, water and sanitation systems, well-equipped medical clinics, skills training, or longer-term infrastructure.
Key areas of expenditure
- Emergencies - UNHCR's Emergency Response Team works to deliver life-saving essentials such as food, shelter, medical assistance and water in emergency situations of conflict or natural disasters.
- Provides programs that help improve the health and well-being of women and their babies before, during and after childbirth.
- Work tirelessly to prevent and treat malaria in African refugee settlements. Malaria is one of the leading causes of death in these environments so we work to provide tests for rapid diagnosis, anti-malarial medication for pregnant women, mosquito nets and large stocks of artemisenin-based malaria medicines.
- In emergencies and ongoing situations, Australia for UNHCR's raises funds that help to address the need for clean water and sanitation. We provide jerry cans, buckets, water points, water wells and pipelines and purification plants.
- UNHCR is a world leader in the provision of mass emergency shelter. Appointed the lead agency for shelter relief in many crises and disasters, we have managed to get hundreds of thousands of vulnerable families under cover. Our emergency response teams often include site planners, camp management experts and civil engineers.
