Foundation of TMAG - Contemporary Art Fund

Why a contemporary art fund and why now?

The Foundation of TMAG has long had acquisition of contemporary art work for TMAG at the core of its support. With the recent changes in Government matched funding, the cultural renaissance in Tasmania, and the ongoing need to inspire and connect new donors with TMAG the time is right to reinvigorate and firmly establish support for acquisition of contemporary art at the heart of the Foundation for the future.

What is it?

A focused effort by the Foundation of TMAG to raise and transfer funds to TMAG each year to be an acquisition fund. The suggested starting sum is $30,000 per year, but the aim would be to raise this to $50,000 or beyond as support grows.

How does it work?

For the TMAG Art curators, knowledge of their purchasing power for the year ahead will enable them to plan acquisitions and commissions more strategically and to make the Foundation funds go further and have more impact than case by case acquisition.  For Principal Curator of Art, Jane Stewart, it will mean that she can acquire key works before gallery shows open, talk with artists about donations linked to acquisitions, and commission artists for forthcoming shows in advance.

There would still be an option for Jane to bring forward recommendations for consideration by the Foundation, but by committing a fixed level of funds at the start of the financial year, Jane can probably double its impact.

For the Foundation it gives a target for the year’s fundraising associated with contemporary art, and also draws a clear line between giving to the Foundation, and building TMAG’s collection. It also sets up the basis of Foundation communication and events around the artists and new acquisitions, and supports the creation of an affinity group – a contemporary collectors circle – within the foundation that can drive new memberships and social activities.
