Anam Cara House Geelong

Annual Giving Appeal 2016

Anam Cara House Geelong first opened its doors in 2007 and has since supported many thousands of people with chronic and life-limiting illness, and their families.

We are a non-denominational, Nationally-accredited community hospice that provides a variety of services including end-of-life care, overnight care and a vibrant Day Hospice program.

This year, for the first time, Anam Cara House Geelong is launching an Annual Giving Appeal. Your financial support will help ensure we can continue to support people in our local community, the wider Geelong and South West region and beyond.

We receive so much positive feedback from the carers and families of our guests, and from the guests themselves.

Our Day Hospice program, which operates on Tuesdays and Thursdays, provides a welcome break from routine and the chance to form new friendships. Guests enjoy freshly prepared meals and a flexible program of entertainment and activities geared to the individual.

Meanwhile, their carer can take a well-deserved break from the demanding role of looking after a loved one with life-limiting illness.

When it comes to end-of-life care, Anam Cara's home-like environment provides an important alternative to a medicalised setting, while providing the very best of care from qualified clinical staff and trained volunteers.

Statistics show most of us, given a choice, would wish to pass away at home. Sadly that is not the reality for the vast majority of the population.

In November last year we had the pleasure of caring for a beautiful young woman at the end of her life. Her name was Annie. At the time of her death she was just 47 years old, with a loving husband and nine year old daughter.

In the words of Annie's loving husband Darren, "Anam Cara took us in, all of us - even our dog could visit! We could stay overnight, and it felt like a home away from home."

"Annie received the very best of care around the clock from the nursing staff and was beautifully supported emotionally and physically by the many wonderful trained volunteers. It was a world away from the hospital experience. At Anam Cara House Annie was not a patient, and she was more than a guest. She was at home."

Geelong needs an Anam Cara House. We need your help to continue to provide these critical community services, so please give generously during our 2016 Annual Giving Appeal.
