Autism West

Autism West Support Incorporated Other Causes...

Autism West Support Incorporated has listed 1 other cause:

Autism West is a Western Australian not-for-profit providing unique opportunities for children, teenagers and young adults on the autism spectrum to gain skills and experience, enabling them to connect successfully with others and the world around them.

Our mission is to deliver quality services to young Western Australians with autism to enable them to connect successfully with others and the world around them.

The social and communication challenges our members face mean many of our young people experience social isolation and bullying which poses a significant mental health risk for later life, with depression being the most common diagnosis in adolescents and adults with autism. Our approach ensures that participants are given the chance to develop their interests and abilities which have positive effects on increased social engagement, opportunities for success and increased resilience.

How We Do It

We run a range of highly successful social groups, including the Awesome Group for ages 10-15, the Youth Engaging Successfully Group for ages 13-19, Step into Social for ages 18-30 and a school holiday program. Our activities include public speaking, computer coding, Lego robotics, art, media and music.

We plan our social groups to reflect the diversity, individuality and the rights of our individual members.

Together, we identify interests and establish goals, planning how to achieve these together. Members then discuss and plan future sessions, which can include incursions, community outings, special guests, and special interest projects.

We have also produced an innovative autism therapy app, TOBY, in collaboration with Curtin and Deakin Universities, and offer information evenings and our annual symposium to ensure that families have access to the latest information.

Run by a volunteer Board, Autism West relies on corporate support, donations and project grants to offer its services as they receive no Government operational funding.
