Covid-19 Emergency and Recovery Support for Baucau

We need your help. Your donations will support the ongoing work of Friends of Baucau and the emerging needs of our partner organizations in Baucau in the immediate future.

Our usual methods of fundraising are not possible during this time due the pandemic, so, we have launched our first-ever online fundraising campaign.

What we know

COVID-19 presents significant challenges for Timor-Leste, which is the both the youngest nation and the poorest country in our region.

In Timor, most people live on less than $1 a day, and, regional communities like Baucau are experiencing a marked increase in poverty.

There have been relatively few cases and zero deaths, but this has been achieved through a strict lockdown which has stopped work for many people and affected supply lines.

Markets have been closed, people have been isolating, and households, particularly in areas outside Dili, are feeling the impacts.

There is concern that the availability of personal protective equipment (PPE) and other essential medical supplies may be affected, food security is a growing issue and domestic violence is increasing.

What we don't know

We are gathering information on the impacts of the lockdown on food security, the number of potential cases entering from Indonesia, and how Timor-Leste's government support schemes will operate.

We anticipate that we will continue to receive calls for assistance from a range of local organizations in Baucau, although it is difficult to predict the extent to which this will happen.

Where will the funds be used?

At this time, more than ever, we want to maintain our support, and build the capability of our partners in Baucau to respond the challenges the pandemic presents.

We have already provided significant support to the Baucau Municipal Authority and to local NGO Fundasaun Lafaek Diak, and they may request further help.

We want to help communities with their short-term needs (like purchasing PPE for local hospitals, clinics and vulnerable groups) and continue to support community initiatives that are making a difference for the long-term (like school gardens and education around productive farming techniques).
