Bright Minds Youth Suicide Prevention

The Bright Minds, Connected Communities Project involves a three tiered approach to youth suicide prevention to address the need of the local community, capitalises on the strengths of local services and is driven by young people for young people.

Bright Minds will operate from July 2017 to June 2020 but with your donation CALM will help keep this program going beyond 2020.

Bright Minds involves;

Part 1 - Partnering with the Lake Macquarie Suicide Prevention Network (LMSPN) to update existing suicide prevention information and intervention packs. To further meet current need, Aboriginal and Youth specific packs will be developed and distributed across Lake Macquarie.

Part 2 - Deliver the Livingworks Australia SafeTalk workshop and the Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) program free to teachers and support staff across the region. These programs are designed to support people working with young people to assess, manage and provide resources to this at risk group.

Part 3 - Work with local mental health organisations Headspace and Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service to conduct a series of Postive Mental Health and Wellbeing Workshops in Lake Macquarie involving Year 7 and Year 9 students in local High Schools. Workshops deliver youth led multimedia programs of video, music, art and theatre to improve mental health literacy, increase help seeking strategies and inform students of how to identify and respond to mental health warning signs.
