Beating Loneliness through Community Broadcasting

Why are we collecting funds?

Catherine was lonely and suicidal.  It was community radio that saved her.

Forced to resign from her job because of illness, the pain and surgeries left her a broken woman.  Unemployed and disconnected, Catherine fell victim to loneliness.

Catherine joined 3WBC, her local radio station, in 2003 after meeting a volunteer presenter.  The rest, as they say, is history.  Awarded a Station Life Membership in 2015, Catherine said "if other people knew how much my life has changed since becoming involved in community radio they would jump at the chance of joining."

What are we doing?

Unfortunately, Catherine's story is all too familiar.  Around 30 percent of us have experienced significant loneliness.

We want to fund dedicated community engagement workers at stations to proactively create the connections that are proven to beat loneliness.

Community broadcasting connects people by:

  • by reducing the stigma of being lonely
  • connecting people across communities
  • increasing volunteering

You can help people like Catherine

With your support, we can fund community radio stations to focus on beating loneliness in their local area.  Donating to the Community Broadcasting Development Fund means that more people can feel connected to their community and beat the crushing blow of loneliness.
