Jo runs for Djirra

Supporting Djirra

Supporting Aboriginal women's safety and wellbeing

On 23rd May, I'll be running in my first ever half marathon – a trail run through Gariwerd/the Grampians, the land of the Djab Wurrung and the Jardwadjali people.

Leading up to the race I will be raising funds for Djirra – an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation in Victoria who offer practical support to all Aboriginal women, in particular Aboriginal people who are currently experiencing family violence or have in the past.

Djirra does important work in the prevention of family violence, supporting women through cultural workshops, offering legal services and support, and as vocal advocates for the rights and wellbeing of Aboriginal women in Victoria and beyond.

“Djirra is the Woiwurrung word for the reed used by Wurundjeri women for basket weaving. Traditionally, when women gathered to weave, important talks took place and problems were solved. Djirra symbolises Aboriginal women today, still coming together to share stories, support each other and find solutions.”

It’s important to me as a non-Indigenous person living on unceded Wurundjeri land, that the women whose ancestors have lived here, and cared for this land thousands of years are heard and supported. Because of the colonial invasion that took place here, the brutal violence that ensued, and the ongoing oppression of Aboriginal people – organisations like Djirra need our support.

So please help fund Djirra’s work by donating to this fundraiser, and help me get over the line in my half marathon.

Also, I would be very grateful if you could share this link with your friends and family. The more people who can contribute the better!

Thank you so much,

Jo Khan
