Health and wellbeing in remote Indigenous communities

No school? No pool! How one NT community is tackling education and health challenges in the outback!

Help support the health and hygiene of kids in the Western Desert.

A Northern Territory community is using the lure of the local council swimming pool as a way to increase attendance rates at school, with the added bonus of improving hygiene and lowering skin and eye infection rates.

About 450 Pintupi people live in the remote community of Kintore (Walungurru), 530km west of Alice Springs. The group sold their indigenous artworks to raise enough money to build the community pool in 2005 and since then, the council has been maintaining the pool, a costly exercise in the Western Desert.

“We’re now working to fundraise again.  We have generous donations for solar panels and a new filter at cost but we need financial support to install everything as the community is in the middle of the desert and getting trades out there is expensive. We hope to gain enough money to give our kids free entry as a reward for going to school in 2020. We have to empower our kids,” said Monica Robinson, Walungurru Leader.

Almost half of the Kintore community are children, with 40% of the population under the age of 18.

Red Dust would like to support improvements to the Walungurru (Kintore) Pool infrastructure to facilitate the sustainable ongoing running of the pool. By supporting improvements to pool infrastructure, such as fitting a new filtration system and installing solar panels, we will reduce the running costs of the pool in order to facilitate free entry for community members. Make a splash by helping us support the health and wellbeing of this amazing community!
