ACT Policing's Superintendent Corey Heldon is shaving her head as part of the DVCS Shave for the Brave on Monday 15 March 2021.
“I’m shaving my head for my mother.
Her life might have turned out very differently if my mother had been able to access services like DVCS when I was young. At that time support for single-parents was limited or non-existent, so options for victims of family violence were few. Family violence was also never really talked about.
Until you see family violence first hand, it’s remote. It’s very different reading a story in a newspaper as opposed to having lived experience. It’s hard to understand the genuine impact on families unless you see it, sometimes in a very confronting way.
I have been in policing for more than 30 years and throughout that time DVCS has been a constant, critical service we have worked with to support our community.”
