Project AWARE Foundation

Where Conservation Meets Adventure

We are unique in our focus on Marine Debris or Ocean plastic pollution.

Why marine debris?: More than 250 million tons of plastic are estimated to make its way into our ocean by 2025. Everyday trash is entering the sea at an unprecedented rate. It is urgent, now more than ever, that we take collective action against the onslaught of marine debris. Project AWARE works to reduce underwater impacts of marine debris and prevent trash from entering the ocean in the first place. Through Partnerships Against Trash, we work with businesses, NGOs and governments to advocate for long-term solutions and influence policies at local, national and international levels. But global change is also empowered by grassroots action. That’s why we developed our flagship citizen science program, Dive Against Debris®, the first and only marine debris survey of its kind focused on scuba divers reporting types and quantities of debris found on the ocean floor.

Goals:

  • Share the underwater impacts of pollution through data collection and reporting to influence policy
  • Reduce the amount of pollution in the ocean
  • Save marine life from the detrimental impacts of pollution

Track Record of Success
For over 25 years, together with our partners and global community, we responded to the threats our ocean faces and we’ve had some incredible successes.

  • In 1993 Project AWARE began to support volunteers who wanted to remove litter from the land and beneath the waves.
  • Developed the first and only underwater marine debris survey, Dive Against Debris® (launched 2011)
  • Launched the interactive Dive Against Debris map visualising marine debris surveys conducted across the globe (2014)
  • Adopted over 390 dive sites with over 6,000 divers taking action in 70 countries around the world (launched 2016)
  • Built a community of over 180,000 adventurers
  • Launched the Dive Against Debris mobile app (2017)
  • Trained and supported an army of almost fifty thousand citizen scientists to remove underwater trash, save ocean wildlife and report the data (2018)
  • Removed and reported over 1,000,000 trash items from underwater environments (2018)

How Does Your Donation Help?

We've collected data on over one million items of debris and need your help now to collect the next million and put this data to work to prevent  pollution from choking our ocean's wildlife in the future.

Thank you for your generous support!
