Over 10,000 people experience homelessness every night in Western Australia. Experiencing homelessness is much broader than a person being street present, it is when a person does not have a secure and safe accommodation on a permanent basis. Experiencing homelessness can include sleeping on park benches, under bridges, in squats, doorways, alley ways, couch surfing with friends or family, staying in houses that are overcrowded, refuges, caravan parks, or in accommodation without a formal accommodation agreement.

People experiencing homelessness are likely to have at least one if not more legal problems which severely reduces their chances of exiting homelessness.

Street Law doesn't do it alone. To maintain its service Street Law has developed partnerships with law firms who provide Street Law with volunteer lawyers to assist with service delivery. We also work closely with highly relevant social, welfare and health workers and organisations to ensure our clients have support to address all of the issues that contribute to their experience of homelessness.

We work towards breaking the cycle of homelessness by:

  • Increasing access to justice through our legal clinics at 6 locations throughout the Perth metropolitan area;
  • Providing community legal education to homelessness support workers and those that are experiencing homelessness;
  • Providing a free advice line service; and
  • Developing policy and law reform submissions on issues that affect people experiencing homelessness.

Why Street Law needs you help

Street Law is a not for profit organisation. Street Law provides vital legal support and assistance to some of our community’s most vulnerable members. At Street Law one of our legal areas is assisting our clients to obtain their identity documents. We assist our clients to submit the applications, gather the documents required for the applications, and we fund the application fees. However, we are not funded to pay for our client’s identity documents, we pay for these applications through your donations. All donations that we receive go directly to paying for our client’s identity documents.

In the 2021/2022 financial year, 37.5% of our clients needed assistance with obtaining their identity documents, these included national and international birth certificates, photo cards, replacement driver’s licences, Immicards, replacement Australian citizenship certificates and change of name applications. These documents cost from $30 to $240 and in some situations a client will require more than one of these documents. Through donations we are able to cover the costs of these essential documents for our clients. These documents are required for everyday life and without them our clients are excluded from participating in society. We are seeking your donations to sustain this vital support.

All donations are tax deductible. Your donations will be helping the most vulnerable in our community. Thank you for your support of our organisation.
