Defending the Environment

The EDOWA provides vital public interest environmental law services with the support of community funding. We need your donations to continue these services.

Support our Tax Appeal today with a tax-deductible donation to help us continue our work.

Please consider what we've been able to do with that past support and what we can do in the future.

In 2013, EDO counsel won a major case in the Supreme Court of WA to invalidate the State's  approval to develop the Browse Basin LNG hub at James Price Point on the Kimberley coast, the world's largest humpback whale nursery and home to spinner and snubfin dolphins, turtles and dugongs. We represented The Wilderness Society of WA (Inc) and Mr Richard Hunter, a member of the Goolarabooloo people. This proposal was re-assessed and recommended for approval by the EPA in 2015 and we may act again if the Minister re-approves the proposal.

In April 2016, the Supreme Court dismissed a defamation action begun in April 2012 by a developer against three local opponents, one of whom EDOWA represented. This was a significant victory for the local community.

We've published an informative report on the State's proposed Green Growth Plan for the Perth and Peel Regions.  Such reports assist community members to participate in government processes with enduring effects.  Right now, the WA government is considering new laws for our precious water resources. As a member of the Department of Water's stakeholder reference group, EDOWA is poised to advise on these issues.

These are just some examples where EDOWA has acted for protection of communities and the environment. While high profile issues attract attention, much more work goes on "behind the scenes", advising, assisting and educating the public on a wide range of issues affecting our environment.

Please give generously to our end of financial year appeal. Without your past support, EDOWA would not still be here to assist communities who need our help.  There is no other environmental community legal centre in WA.  With our expertise, the passion of communities who care, and your support, we can continue protecting the beautiful and fragile WA environment.
