Nutrition Australia Victorian Division

Let's Fight Childhood Obesity

Nutrition Australia is a not for profit organisation which provides programs to schools and the wider Victorian community to educate people on healthy eating and lifestyle options. For more than 25 years Nutrition Australia has promoted healthy eating as a lifestyle choice. Nutrition Australia has developed the Healthy Eating Schools Program (HES) which provides schools with professional support and tools to implement a range of sustainable activities that promote healthy eating across the whole school environment. Nutrition Australia works with schools across Victoria through programs and activities for canteen changes, parents, and teachers. In 2004 the HES program is launched into 15 Victorian schools reaching 5,000 children, it has rapidly expanded to 98 Victorian schools in 2007, reaching almost 40,000 children.

How will the funds be used?

Currently, Nutrition Australia's HES program is funded by philanthropic organisations, with no core government funding. The program is offered at no cost to schools - which is a very important factor for schools with limited budgets. With growing community concern over childhood obesity and the health impacts on our society, it is important that public attention is given to this condition. Nutrition Australia's Victorian Division will target 100 primary schools to participate in the HES program for 2008. Based on the successful model; this will reach more than 35,000 Victorian primary school students and furthermore, the wider school community including staff, parents and food service / canteen managers.

Key Areas of Expenditure

Provision of healthy eating resources to schools such as the healthy fundraising manuals and the development of the HES School Newsletter CD ROM which is used for weekly nutrition inserts that are distributed to all parents.
Funds will also be used for provision of healthy lunchbox workshops to parents and teaching nutrition workshops to teachers.
There will be development of new case studies to provide ideas and inspiration to schools, assisting of the case study school with promoting their school and providing support to all schools in the HES program.
