Friends of Kolkata is a Melbourne-based, not-for-profit organisation that is committed to fundraising and awareness-raising activities on behalf of the Institute of Social Work, an NGO in Kolkata.
Together, our projects help to improve the lives of women and children living in poverty- in particular, giving them opportunities for education, financial independence, health services, and freedom from domestic violence.
We are an entirely volunteer-run body, and all of our funds go directly towards projects in Kolkata.
The aims of our work are:
We provide funds and support for many important projects currently running in Kolkata. Some of the areas we need money for include:
Scholarships. We run a scholarship program that helps put girls through school, and we have recently committed to funding tuition for boys as well.
Day care centre. This centre gives children of agricultural and other daily labourers a safe and hygienic place to play and learn while their parents are at work.
English and computer literacy project. This initiative aims to equip girls and boys with skills that will open up better employment opportunities for their future.
Women's shelter. We are desperately seeking funds to begin construction of a rehabilitation shelter for widows and women who have suffered domestic abuse.
