“We have a new family enrolling (at our school) this week who have been living in a car. They have three lovely children who have not been attending school. They have just secured housing and the vouchers means we have been able to offer support with school supplies / shoes etc.”
Many families in remote, rural and regional Australia struggle to provide the basics their children need for school. FRRR’s Back to School vouchers mean families struggling financially can buy things like uniforms, bags, shoes, socks, underwear, lunchboxes, drink bottles and stationery. for their children to start the school year.
FRRR developed the Back to School (BTS) program in 2005 as a practical and positive program that makes a real difference in the lives of children and families. The BTS program provides $50 Target, Kmart or Local Business vouchers through community organisation partners to give families in need the opportunity to purchase basic items their children need for school.
The BTS program is discrete, allowing community-based organisations, support services or schools to identify children and families in need of support without parents having to ask for help. In 2023, the BTS program distributed over $780,000 in vouchers that assisted more than 15,700 students and their families to meet the costs associated with start of a new school year.
The number of vouchers FRRR can distribute is entirely dependent on the funds we raise.
The feedback we receive from the recipients is truly heart-warming, knowing that a small gesture can make such a difference in a child or parent’s life.
One mum said, “I can't believe my son gets to wear new leather shoes to school tomorrow. Are you sure I don't need to pay you back?' This mum has never experienced such community support and cried when she realised she could show her children she was capable of providing for them on her own.”
